ANH-Intl eAlert: It's never too late to do it right

20th June 2012

Hot off the press we bring you news that Robert and Misha Verkerk have made it to Nice and successfully cycled across the French Alps! You can follow their 318 mile journey across the 6 highest peaks in the Alps — ascending an altitude higher than Everest — on our Facebook page. We'll cover their epic ride in a feature article on their return in next week's eAlert.

Summer seems to be finally reaching us here in the UK with the sun making more than just a guest appearance this week. Summer sunshine always seems to bring with it a desire to get active and healthy. So whilst we realise that some of you are experiencing the depths of winter, our message this week is that it's always the right time to get healthy – no matter the weather, your health, circumstances or age. Our lead story is all about how to maximise your evolutionary blueprint through calorie restriction. This is particularly topical as it was an integral part of Rob's endurance training and preparation for this intense alpine challenge. Improving his metabolic flexibility and maximizing his body's ability to generate energy from burning fats and proteins, as well as glucose, has been a key part of his training schedule.

Congratulations Rob and Mish – we're very proud of you! That 28 year age gap doesn't seem to have made any difference…. But then we know that working with our genetic blueprint rather than against it is the way to live a long, healthy, happy and active life.

If you need any more incentive or proof that exercise and diet are essential for good health, then meet 75-year-old Ernestine Sheperd. A personal trainer, and fitness instructor; she’s an inspiration to us all. Having taken a look at herself in the mirror buying bathing suits in her 50's she decided to do something about what she saw. At 71 she took up body building and at 73 she became the oldest competitive female body builder. With a body of someone in their 20's, we agree with her that, "if there ever was an anti-aging pill, it would be exercise"!

These two stories have confirmed one thing to us — it’s never too late to get healthy! It's a pity that the bureaucratic and biotech machines seem hell bent on doing quite the opposite. In Europe the health claims debacle continues, but thankfully, a new report is out effectively dismissing the claims for why we need GM.

Yours in health, naturally
