Andrew Wakefield co-accused wins court battle against UK General Medical Council

Inadequate and superficial reasoning" led to Professor John Walker-Smith being struck off

Could recent developments signal an upturn in fortunes for Andrew Wakefield, the UK gastroenterologist struck off by the General Medical Council (GMC) in 2010 after his research ignited controversy over the safety of the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) combined vaccine?

GMC came to “wrong conclusions”

Professor John Walker-Smith had been one of the world’s most respected gastroenterologists, heading up the Department of Paediatric Gastroenterology at London’s prestigious Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine. After appearing as co-author on Andrew Wakefield’s case series, published – and since retracted – by The Lancet medical journal, however, he found himself mired in controversy. Close to retirement, Walker-Smith found himself hauled up in front of a GMC kangaroo court, found guilty of serious professional misconduct and struck off the medical register. All for publishing a case series – not even a full research paper – that merely observed the occurrence of intestinal problems (colitis) in 12 children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), while acknowledging that parents of nine of the children associated symptom onset with MMR vaccine exposure.

Now, following the usual extended legal process, Professor Walker-Smith has won his appeal against the GMC’s findings.  The appeal judge went beyond merely reversing Walker-Smith’s removal from the medical register by launching a withering attack on the GMC’s decision-making, describing it as, “Inadequate and superficial...and, in a number of instances, [reaching] a wrong conclusion”.

Now that someone found guilty of the same charge as Wakefield has been entirely exonerated, many are speculating that it can only be a matter of time before Wakefield, himself, is cleared.

Wakefield vs. Deer, Godlee and the BMJ

Meanwhile, Wakefield is seeking some measure of justice by bringing a legal case in Texas, USA, against his main accusers, journalist Brian Deer, the British Medical Journal (BMJ) and its editor, Fiona Godlee. Wakefield is seeking to use the Texas Long-Arm Statute to bring the case, citing “false and defamatory” articles, editorials and subsequent publicity about Wakefield in the Lone Star State.

On the justice trail

Wakefield and his supporters have set up a legal defense fund that is accepting international donations – so you know what to do, people!  He is also becoming a darling of the USA ‘health freedom’ movement, and was recently interviewed by Robert Scott Bell at the Health Freedom Expo in Long Beach, California, alongside ANH-Intl’s Rob Verkerk.  Find Drs Wakefield and Verkerk’s interviews in the Natural News Radio archive, dated 6th and 5th March 2012, respectively.

Could 2012 be the year when Wakefield begins to clear his name – possibly turning the tide definitively against vaccine manufacturers and their media and professional accomplices?  We can only hope...

Call to action

  1. Contribute to Andrew Wakefield’s legal fund
  2. Read his book, Callous Disregard, and learn all about the MMR story from a perspective that the world’s media, vaccine industry and medical establishment have tried desperately to suppress

Walker-smith was cleared cause he's the co-author not the actual fraud himself like. Wakefield. I am so sick of hearing people support this guy. All he wants is money, why do you think there a link on this page to give him money??? How stupid is that. He's been receiving free money from people since he moved to texas and probably before that too. If he actually cares about kiss then why did start this disease epidemic. No one wants to vaccinate and now kids are getting diseases that were becoming rare but now are spreading. Just today a school had to shut down because of the large number of flu amd whooping cough cases. As of may there have been over 1100 cases of whooping in just washington alone, compared to just over 100 from this time last year. And washington isn't the only state having these terrible breakouts. Sometimes I think people want to believe this only because believeing in this wakko keeps moms froms wondering if they did something wrong, no parent wants to believe they are at fault so blaming vaccines gives them an answer that puts the blame on someone else. Besides why would there be a conspirecy anyways? What exactly would be this reason doctors would hide this from the public that's just crazy. This just all needs to be over already and wakefield needs to go back to where he came from. We don't want him here in america.
Stop letting this guy brainwash you people! Take care of your kids! Honestly I think parents that them themselves have been vaccinated when they were kids and yet chise not to vaccinate there own children are SELFISH! Cause that means you are immune but you arent allowing your children to be!! That's like wearing a seatbelt yourself and not letting your child wear one. Give yourself a round of applause people.

Hi happymom, thanks for your comment. You’re very clear in your dislike and distrust of Dr Wakefield, and of your fondness for vaccines. There is, however, another side to both stories, so please allow us to provide some material for you to consider.

It’s more accurate to say that there are numerous sides to both stories, since the amount of disinformation, confusion and plain lies about the Wakefield/MMR saga and vaccination itself is almost unbelievable. It’s extremely difficult to plot a course through the mountains of nonsense, in fact, and there are few genuine sources of unbiased information out there. But, at the outset, don’t forget: governments and Big Pharma have enormous amounts of money invested in vaccines, so they are always going to defend their positions. And since we, the populations of vaccinated countries, trust those institutions to put our safety and good health above all other considerations, it’s a two-way street. If public belief in vaccines crumbles, Big Pharma goes broke and they, governments and a large part of orthodox medicine lose the trust of the people.

So, it’s no exaggeration to say that society would change enormously overnight if current attitudes to vaccination shifted significantly. Dr Wakefield’s research threatened to do just that, thereby providing an enormous incentive for the establishment to discredit him – which it has largely done. But cracks are beginning to show in the united front presented against Dr Wakefield.

The acquittal of Prof Walker-Smith is one of them. However you look at it, he was accused and found guilty of the same charges as Dr Wakefield, and if one man is innocent, then so is the other. There are far more subtleties in the acquittal judgement that we can possibly cover here, so we’ll point you to a recent article by Martin J Walker on the topic: http://anh-europe.org/news/lots-of-law-little-justice.

Likewise, the details of the case against Dr Wakefield are fiendishly complex and have been muddied over and over again by professional detractors, most notably ‘investigative journalist’ Brian Deer. We’ve written quite a bit about it over the years, so you might like to look at these articles:

http://anh-europe.org/news/wakefield-on-wakefield
http://anh-europe.org/news/anh-feature-the-longest-witch-hunt-in-medical...
http://anh-europe.org/files/080710_Walker_Conflicts-of-integrity.pdf

We’d also recommend you pick up Dr Wakefield’s own book on the saga, “Callous Disregard” [http://www.callous-disregard.com/] – and maybe his new one as well [http://www.callous-disregard.com/buythebook.htm]! And do also search out Martin J Walker’s work [http://www.slingshotpublications.com/martin.html]. We’re sure you will quickly come to the conclusion that Wakefield is not the charlatan and fraud he has been made out to be. For us, his determination to educate the public on the issues surrounding vaccination and autism – the only reason he’s asking for money is to help fund a lawsuit in Texas against his accusers [http://anh-europe.org/news/wakefield-hits-back-at-bmj-over-%E2%80%9Cfraud%E2%80%9D-claims] – is admirable and a sign that there is more to this story than meets the eye.

We’re not sure where you’re coming from by asking, “Why did he start this disease epidemic?” Which epidemic do you mean? All he did in that context was recommend that UK – not USA – parents opt for the single measles, mumps and rubella vaccines instead of the combined MMR vaccine. At which point, the UK government made the single vaccines unavailable. Hardly Dr Wakefield’s fault! And since neither flu nor whooping cough are part of the MMR vaccine, we’d suggest that any rise in US parents not wishing to vaccinate their kids is more due to wider distrust of vaccination itself than Dr Wakefield’s influence.

There are very good reasons for this distrust [http://anh-europe.org/news/winters-upon-us-vaccination-faq]. With regard to the Washington whooping cough outbreak, several points are relevant. Is there any proof that vaccination rates have dropped significantly in Washington? From news reports, it looks like investigation is still ongoing to determine the cause [http://www.boisestatepublicradio.org/post/cdc-investigate-wa-whooping-cough-epidemic], but of course officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated anyway. Since the US is a highly vaccinated population, and since kids must receive the whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine before they can enter state schools, and since the latest figures available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [http://www2a.cdc.gov/nip/coverage/nis/CountNIS.asp?fmt=v&rpt=tab02_antigen_iap_1011.pdf&qtr=Q3/2010-Q2/2011] show that 93% of Washington children received 3 or more doses of a pertussis-containing vaccine – aren’t we more likely to be looking at a case of vaccine failure than a case of widespread vaccine avoidance?

Given that the effectiveness of the pertussis vaccine is a statistical mirage [http://anh-europe.org/news/winters-upon-us-vaccination-faq - Question_2], we’d place a reasonable wager that that’s the case.

Finally – well, nearly – you may want to read this before accusing parents who are questioning vaccines of being selfish [http://anh-europe.org/news/winters-upon-us-vaccination-faq - Question_3].

Regardless of what we do or don’t believe about vaccines, there’s an enormous amount of high-quality scientific information out there showing that natural immune-boosting methods dramatically outperform vaccination [http://www.anh-europe.org/files/060327_ANH_natural_products_H5N1_report_FINAL.pdf], with none of the side effects. And that report doesn’t even mention vitamin D [http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/]! That level of scientific evidence of efficacy [http://anh-europe.org/news/winters-upon-us-vaccination-faq - Question_1] and safety, especially among children [http://anh-europe.org/news/honey-–-do-our-kids-need-all-those-vaccinations], is something that vaccines can only dream of.

I just wish more doctors came forward who want to heal the sick rather than drink pharmakool aid all their life

Andrew Wakefield is an honourable and honest Consultant whose only 'fault' was to warn the public of what he considered dangerous for the health of children.
We have repeatedly heard about unprincipled doctors and know are already well aware of the pharmaceutical industry's ultimate goals. However, this scandal really takes the cake!
I sincerely hope his name is eventually cleared but there is no doubt that this affair could have ruined not only his career but his life.

We are behind you Dr Wakefield and hope you will be the beacon of light this caring profession sorely needs!

For far too long the pharmaceutical industry has put its financial interests before the health of the public. Its history of burying contraindications is not only legendary, but was officially exposed by the House of Commons Select Committee report on the Influence of the Pharmaceutical Industry. Andrew Wakefield was politically "assassinated" by those with a financial interest in poisoning our children. I have long prayed for his name to be cleared and his vital contribution to be acknowledged. Bring it on!
